HI works with local actors and service providers to improve access to early detection of disabilities and early intervention services for very young children. Our teams also intervene among the most vulnerable to identify children with disabilities and ensure their access to health and learning services.
HI supports the prevention of COVID-19 infections and mitigates its socio-economic impact on vulnerable populations by providing vulnerable households with food and cash assistance and supporting the recovery of their income generating activity.
In Asyut governorate, HI aims to strengthen the economic empowerment of households of people with disabilities by providing support to their businesses and promoting economic inclusion.
HI also facilitates the access of refugees and asylum seekers to humanitarian assistance and health, mental health and rehabilitation services, and distributes cash to the most vulnerable families.
Hintergrund / Background

People with disabilities are still overlooked in Egypt, although social and political systems are rapidly evolving. Since 2011 and the Arab Spring, members of the Movement for the Rights of People with Disabilities, along with other stakeholders in Egyptian society, have successfully campaigned for the creation of a National Council on Disability Affairs. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has weakened the country’s economic situation, delaying potential progress in the field of disability.
According to the UNHCR, over 300,000 refugees from Sudan arrived in Egypt in 2023. Most of them were women, children and female-headed households requiring assistance.
